Back in 2008, a co-worker pretended to be my secretary and made an appointment for me to see Dr. Johnson. She knew that I hadn't been to see a dentist in years due to my enormous fear of my teeth being poked and prodded by strangers with metal hooks. She decided that it was time for me to go whether I liked it or not (can you believe her?).

When I arrived at the office I didn't know what to expect. I think I might have even had butterflies in my stomach. But that all changed once I met the staff at James E. Johnson DDS and Associates. Everyone was so friendly, and Dr. J was no different. We went over my complete dental history together. Even the part about me hating the dentist (he was surprisingly understanding). It was definitely the greatest medical related experience of my life.

I have since been back 3 or 4 times for my basic check ups and cleans, and every time I'm there it's like visiting friends and family. Not only am I not afraid of the dentist anymore, I actually kind of like going. That's right. I said it.

I have already recommended multiple patients to Dr. Johnson, and I can assure you that I will continue to do so anytime someone asks about dentists in DC.

Do yourself a favor and make an appointment with the best dentist in the District, Dr. James E. Johnson.

We’ve been having our teeth cared for by a downtown institution for the last 11 years.

We’ve recommended Dr James E. Johnson to people in search of a dentist so often you’d think we were part owners (we’re not). Located inside 555 12th St NW (corner of 12th & F; next to the Celadon Spa), Dr Johnson & Associates is made up of just about the friendliest people you could ever hope to meet.

We don’t know how long Dr J has been at the 555 12th St location but as we noted above it’s been at least 11 years.

Dr J is also a PQ neighbor who walks to work; it’s always a pleasure to run into him at a restaurant or on the street. Earlier this year Dr J’s office experimented with Saturday hours, but their website doesn’t note those now so we’re not sure if they’re still in effect.

We’ve always preferred weekday morning appointments and try to get our cleanings as early as possible. With a dentist this close you can have your teeth cleaned, walk back home for breakfast, and still make it to work before 9.

We know most of us choose our doctors based on our insurance plan first, and recommendations second. But if you’re in the market for a great dentist, we’ve got the guy for you.

I *adore* my dentist (Dr. Johnson) (how often does one say that?!).

Why? I'm glad you asked. First off, I'm a pansy when it comes to people diggin' around in my mouth. He's understanding of that little personal glitch without being annoyed or condescending about it. He's very patient and actually takes time to talk to you, so you don't feel like you're in a McDonald's DriveThru version of a dental visit.

Additionally, his staff appears to be on happy pills. These people are hap hap happy and actually give a shyt about helping you, which is a rarity in the District where customer service is at a minimum. His hygenist, Andy, is friendly, interesting (from Vietnam, has great stories and cute pix of his child), and communicative about how to best get through the visit without pain (TMI: I had braces which left little grooves near my gums, most dental offices weren't sensitive to the pain that causes during cleanings). Andy cares! ......
