Crowns
What is it?
When the extent of your tooth decay is beyond the limit of repair using dental fillings or inlays, you may need to have a dental crown to restore your tooth. In general, crowns are used when the entire tooth surface is damaged, but the root system is intact. Crowns cover the entire visible surface of the affected tooth. It adds strength and stability to the tooth.
In some cases crowns are used to replace a missing tooth. These crowns are anchored to the teeth on either side, with a bridge section connecting the two crowns.
How is it done?
Getting a crown for your tooth usually takes about two visits with us. During your first visit we make an impression of your affected tooth. The impression is then sent to the dental lab to create your crown. At this time we also remove the damaged areas of your tooth and fit you with a transitional crown.

During the second visit we place the crown. We will work with you from the first appointment on to discuss and select the cement color so that it matches with your other teeth.
Follow-up
Usually, there is no follow-up visit needed.
What can you expect, and what are the risks
Crowns usually last 10 to 15 years. For persons with unhealthy gums, special precautions may be needed. Your doctors at James E. Johnson DDS, & Associates P.C. will discuss with you of any precautions you may need to take, based on your dental health status and history.
You can fool your family and friends with a skillfully fabricated and placed dental crown or dental bridge.
